Palestine and The Gaza Humanitarian Crisis

The Gaza Strip is enduring an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe, exacerbated by prolonged conflict and stringent blockades. Since the intensification of hostilities in October 2023, the situation has deteriorated alarmingly. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, between October 7, 2023, and January 14, 2025, at least 46,645 Palestinians have been killed, with 110,012 injured. The United Nations reports that approximately 1.9 million people—about 90% of Gaza’s population—are displaced, many having been forced to move multiple times.

The blockade has led to acute shortages of essential supplies, including food, medicine, and fuel, crippling healthcare services and sanitation infrastructure. Fewer than half of Gaza’s 36 hospitals are still functioning, depriving women and girls, including an estimated 150,000 pregnant women and new mothers, of critical healthcare services. International aid agencies have called for immediate action to lift the blockade and allow the unimpeded flow of humanitarian assistance to avert further loss of life and alleviate the suffering of Gaza’s civilian population.

At least one girl and nine other civilians were killed on the 25th February during the shelling of ten schools, as the latest escalation in conflict continues. Some schools were in class, some had broken up for the day and some were being used as shelters. According to Save the Children’s partner organisation Hurras Network, this is the highest number of schools hit by attacks in Idlib in a single day since at least the start of 2019. Twenty-two schools have now been hit since the start of 2020. During the latest attack, at least three teachers were killed. Dozens more children and at least seven teachers were injured. Most of the attacks took place during school hours. The girl who died was killed outside her school just after she had left, and her school was also directly hit.
