Sudan’s Continued Civil War and Displacement

Since April 2023, Sudan has been engulfed in a violent power struggle between the national army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), leading to widespread atrocities and a dire humanitarian situation. The conflict has resulted in thousands of deaths and has displaced millions, both internally and across borders.

As of January 2025, over 8 million people are internally displaced within Sudan, with around 25 million—nearly half of the country’s population—in need of humanitarian assistance and protection services. Ethnic violence has surged, particularly in regions like Darfur, exacerbating the crisis.

Despite calls for the deployment of a U.N. peacekeeping force, Secretary-General António Guterres has stated that current conditions are unsuitable for such an operation, advocating instead for alternative measures to protect civilians and facilitate aid delivery.
